I took the first photo almost by accident. Standing in the bathroom, catching my stomach in bad lighting, the kind you take just to have proof of where you're starting from, not because you expect to ever want to look at it again. That was a few months after having my daughter. My skin was doing exactly what postpartum skin does: loose in places that used to hold tension, stretch marks settled in deep, a line down my stomach that hadn't faded the way I assumed it eventually would. I didn't hate my body. I just didn't recognize it, and there's a specific kind of tired that comes with that, on top of every other kind of tired a new mother already carries. A few of my friends had often praised how Besque's Magic Body Oil helped them get through this exact self-conscious stage. So once I stopped nursing my daughter, I picked it up. Before I knew it, it became a crucial part of my routine. It became five minutes I'd give myself, mostly whenever I got lucky and she napped for an hour instead of twenty minutes. Worked into my stomach and thighs, twice a day when I could manage it, five minutes that were fully mine in a day that otherwise wasn't. Evening primrose oil for the elasticity that pregnancy asks so much of and gives so little time to recover. Rosehip oil, the strongest-evidence ingredient in the formula, for the tone and texture. It's the one actually backed by published research for improving the appearance of scarring and pigmentation, which is exactly what stretch marks and that dark line down the middle both are. I took the second photo a while later, in the same bathroom, same bad lighting, mostly to see if I was imagining a difference. I wasn't. My skin looks tighter. The texture is smoother. The marks are still there, just not as prominent. What changed is everything underneath and around them: firmer, more even, more like skin that's being cared for instead of just endured. I didn't take these photos for anyone else. I almost didn't post them at all. But I remember exactly how it felt catching that first photo and not recognizing myself, and if seeing the second one helps even one other mother believe that feeling doesn't have to be permanent, that's worth more to me than keeping this private.
